Breaking is more than just a dance. It’s a culture, an art form and a global community, with a history spanning more than five decades.
Created in the 1970s in the Bronx by African-American and Puerto Rican kids, breaking is grounded in African-American social dance and has always drawn on a range of sources for inspiration. As the culture spread around the world, breakers, DJs, MCs, graffiti writers, photographers, filmmakers, researchers, organisers and community members continued to embrace and cultivate the form, adding their own ideas and innovations.
These innovations have become part of the foundation that each new generation builds upon. This is what makes breaking an ever-evolving art form.
